Turkmenistan Intensifies International Cooperation in Transport Sector

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov in an online meeting on Tuesday with the Executive Secretary of the International Center for Transport Diplomacy under the UN (ICTD) Igor Runov discussed a wide range of issues of cooperation aimed at improving interconnectivity between the countries by improving the transport infrastructure in Turkmenistan and the region.

The Turkmen Foreign Minister confirmed that Turkmenistan continues to strengthen the legal and logistical basis of the transport and transit corridors, in particular the Lapis-Lazuli corridor, the transit corridor of the Ashgabat agreement (Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman), transport routes under the Caspian Sea-Black Sea initiative and other inter-regional transport routes in the directions East-West and North-South, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in its press release.

The Turkmen side also informed of its Program of Development of Transport Diplomacy of Turkmenistan for 2022-2025, adopted in January 2022, which, in particular, includes strategically important measures aimed at comprehensive modernization of the material and technical base of all modes of transport in Turkmenistan and the further strengthening of the position of the country as a regional center of international transport and transit corridors.

The parties discussed preparations for the International Conference of Ministers of Transport of Landlocked Developing Countries to be held in Turkmenistan in August 2022.

On Monday, a regional conference on the theme “Turkmenistan-OSCE: regional cooperation in the development of transport and logistics” was held in Vienna in a hybrid format.

The event focused on current topical economic issues in Central Asia, with a special emphasis on regional cooperation in transport and logistics development. During the conference, the Turkmen side familiarized the participants with the programs and initiatives of Turkmenistan in the field of sustainable transport and logistics.
