Turkmenistan proposed developing a new UN resolution on the Aral Sea

On the 22nd of April, at a meeting of the Council of heads of state of the International fund for saving the Aral sea (IFAS) in Astana, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov presented an important initiative.

The head of state proposed that Central Asian countries jointly develop a new UN General Assembly resolution on cooperation with IFAS.According to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the document is intended to take into account current geopolitical and economic realities, which will allow for more effective attraction of international investment and donors to address environmental issues in the Aral sea region.

The President of Turkmenistan also emphasised that the initiative is in the interests of all IFAS founding states and creates opportunities for more active interaction with international financial institutions and donors in the implementation of projects and programs.

At the same time, this stems from the need for a significant and qualitative increase in the level of interaction between IFAS and international structures, primarily specialised institutions and UN agencies.
