Turkmenistan’s National Human Rights Action Plan for 2021-2025 presented

The state information agency TDH reports that on 19 May, 2021 Turkmenistan’s National Human Rights Action Plan for 2021-2025 was presented in Ashgabat.

The event brought together representatives of the Khalk Maslakhaty and the Majlis, members of political parties, NGOs as well as executives of local offices of international organizations.

The Action Plan was approved on 16 April and, according to the news outlet, is the continuation of the successfully implemented Action Plan for 2016-2020. It is committed to ensuring and protecting human rights and freedoms in Turkmenistan and fulfilling international commitments.

According to TDH, representatives of international organizations recognized the active role of Turkmenistan on the international arena and the initiatives put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov.

Among key objectives set forth in the Action Plan are improving legal knowledge of residents, facilitating access to information, as well as strengthening relations with the UN and its agencies, the OSCE and other international organizations.

The human rights organization “Turkmen Initiative for Human Rights” previously reported that pursuant to the National Human Rights Action Plan for 2021-2025, Turkmenistan committed itself to permitting and facilitating visits by UN special procedures.
