Turkmenistan has been implementing the Seismic Risk Reduction Program in the areas of high seismic activity, Trend reports referring to Watan newspaper.
The Turkmen Ministry of Construction and Architecture carries out the corresponding work to ensure safe social, economic and environmental conditions for the population living in the abovementioned zones, to determine and take into account the level of seismic hazard and to reduce the impact of potential earthquakes.
This issue was discussed at the governmental meeting. During the meeting, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed the need for a responsible approach to the disaster risk management.
“It is important to construct buildings in accordance with the international standards,” the president stressed. The president also outlined the importance of improving public awareness and strengthening the potential of the corresponding structures in the field of preventing and mitigating the consequences of earthquakes, and developing the active international cooperation in this direction.
Turkmenistan is located in a seismically dangerous zone. On the night of October 6, 1948, a magnitude 10 earthquake occurred in Ashgabat and claimed numerous lives.
More than 20 digital stationary, dozens of autonomous, mobile seismic stations monitor the seismic activity in Turkmenistan. One of these mobile seismic stations is located in the Karakum Desert.
