Turkmenistan to make large scale redundancies in the police starting from next year

Effective 1 January, 2021 large-scale staff redundancies will be carried out in Turkmenistan’s police force. Sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that employees who have reached retirement age will be the first to be laid off.

According to reports by “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”, the first candidates to be made redundant will be those who have tenure of 25 years and more within the Interior Ministry and who hold the rank of sergeant doing so called “easy” jobs”, such as duty officers of departments.

There are many police officers occupying such positions in Dashoguz and Balkan velayats. Moreover, many retired officers are employed in the Road Traffic Safety Inspection Unit.

Additionally, correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that the number of students enrolled in the Institute of the Interior Ministry will be reduced and six-month training courses, including weapons training, have now been closed.

Police officers with the rank of sergeant used to be sent on this course and on s completion were promoted to the rank of junior lieutenant. They subsequently had a chance to be promoted to the rank of major.

Where urgently needed, intensive fire arms training for the rank and file will be offered in velayat police departments.

It should be emphasized that not all police officers have the right to bear fire arms. However, many still wear an empty gun holster. During inspections packs of cigarettes or sunflower seeds have been found in holsters. For this reason a holster is no longer a mandatory feature of a police uniform.

The news about future downsizing in the Road Traffic Safety Inspection Unit as well as state-run institutions has caused rumours that the responsibilities of road police officers and line medical teams will again be carried out by conscripts doing military service, as was practiced under the first Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov.

According to another source, the Marine Military Institute under the Defense Ministry will also reduce the number of trainees admitted to the higher educational establishment next year.
