UN noted the role of its center for preventive diplomacy in Ashgabat

The role of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia was noted by the UN General Assembly, which adopted a corresponding resolution on Friday, April 16, during its 75th session.

The UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) was opened in Ashgabat in 2007.The main task of the Center is to assist the states of Central Asia in identifying and eliminating existing and potential threats to peace and security in the region.

In addition, the Center promotes partnerships between the states of Central Asia in cooperation with regional and international organizations.

Over the years of its existence, it has established itself at the forefront of the Community of Nations in the region, becoming an important negotiating platform for close interaction between the UN and the countries of Central Asia on many topical issues.

Among the main activities of UNRCCA are water and energy issues, general disarmament, peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, countering international terrorism, drug trafficking and other dangerous threats and challenges of our time, socio-economic and environmental aspects.

In 2017, as the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia celebrated its 10th anniversary, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres visited it. The Secretary General met with the staff of the UNRCCA and highly appreciated his work and the initiatives of Turkmenistan.

UNRCCA is currently headed by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative Natalia German (Moldova). Her deputy is Philip Saprykin (Russia).
