USAID Supports Drafting Environmental Monitoring Law in Turkmenistan

June 07, 2022, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan Today, USAID in partnership with the Public Association Enterprise Tebigy Kuwwat hosted a roundtable for the government agencies responsible for environmental monitoring and data collection to discuss regulations that support climate-friendly policies and practices in Turkmenistan.

Clear and effective environmental monitoring helps governing authorities identify, remediate, and prevent degradation of ecosystems, depletion of natural resources, and other negative environmental impacts. USAID, through its Governance Support Program, partnered with national stakeholders and legal experts to draft a law on environmental monitoring.

The draft law reflects the requirements of international conventions and agreements as well as the Government of Turkmenistan’s strategic priorities such as conservation of biological diversity, effective use of natural resources and the protection of ecosystems. In particular, the draft law supports national policies on environmental protection and safety.

In addition, the proposed law will ensure even greater compliance with international laws, and build effective international cooperation on environmental issues. This initiative also aligns with the Government of Turkmenistan’s and USAID’s objectives for stronger regional cooperation in Central Asia, for effective mitigation of environmental risks and for better management over shared natural resources.

At today’s event, key government stakeholders had an opportunity to discuss and provide critical feedback on the draft law and it is now ready for review and adoption by the Mejlis.

The USAID-funded Governance Support Program, implemented by the QED Group LLC, in partnership with the Government of Turkmenistan, aims to strengthen accountability, effectiveness, and transparency of governance in the country.
