Visitor Information Center "Nature of Karakum" opened in Turkmenistan

On the eve of the World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, the opening ceremony of the Visitor Information Center "Nature of Karakum" was held at the Scientific and Experimental Center "Chalysh" of the State Nature Reserve "Bereketli Garagum".

According to the website "Turkmenistan: Golden Age", the Visitor Center was established within the framework of the joint project "Central Asian Desert Initiative - Conservation and Sustainable Use of Deserts of Turkmenistan" (CADI), implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the Michael Succow Foundation for the Protection of Nature (MSF, Germany).

The Сenter has the shape of a Turkmen yurt with an area of 40 square meters and has computer and field equipment. An autonomous solar power plant with a capacity of 10 kW is also installed here.

The new Center "Nature of Karakum" is designed for various environmental events, educational trainings and seminars. One of the functions of the Center is also to provide and disseminate information of the Turanian deserts of the Variable Zone.

The opening ceremony was attended by the representatives of environmental organizations and departments of the country, the Secretariat of the National Commission for UNESCO in Turkmenistan, the World Wildlife Fund, teachers of local schools and media representatives.

Earlier we reported that it is planned to establish Visitor Information Center in the form of a yurt in Turkmenistan.
