Whirling Dervishes performed on a Frozen Lake in Turkey

On the ice-covered freshwater lake Chıldır in the province of Ardahan, a “Sema” performance, known as the dance of whirling dervishes, was staged. Ozkan Karadavut, Ardahan Ozkan University teacher, wearing a traditional dervish costume, rode a horse-drawn sleigh to the middle of an ice-covered lake.

The beauty of the unique dance was captured against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and sunbeams breaking through the clouds, “Anadolu” Agency reports. As the teacher noted, any step aimed at promoting the region, including acquaintance with Lake Childir, is of great importance.

The freshwater lake Chıldır is located in Eastern Anatolia, on the Kara Plateau at an altitude of 1,959 meters above sea level. The lake is the second largest body of water in eastern Turkey after Lake Van.
