A cargo ship with 12 crew members on board sank in Turkey during a storm

The cargo ship Kafkametler with 12 crew members on board sank after hitting a breakwater near the port of Eregli in northern Turkey, TASS reports, citing the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic, Ali Erlikaya.

“Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Turkish-flagged bulk carrier Kafkametler, en route to Izmir, began to drift and sank after hitting a breakwater.Contact with the 12 crew members, Turkish citizens, has not yet been established.

The Coast Guard, Navy, Emergency Management and other agencies are on standby.As soon as weather conditions improve, search and rescue operations will begin,” the source reports the minister’s words.

The captain of the bulk carrier Kafkametler, traveling from the port of Temryuk in the Krasnodar Territory to Aliaga in Izmir, sent a distress signal. However, it was not possible to establish communication with the ship, including visual communication, and search and rescue operations were difficult due to bad weather conditions.
