Turkmen activists released from the deportation facility in Turkey

The human rights organizations the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation, on 31 March, the court ruled that the Turkmen activist Vepa Orazmukhammedov be released from the deportation facility in the Turkish city of Izmir.

Orazmukhammedov was detained in the city of Konya in October 2021 at the behest of Interpol, code № 87. The request to Interpol was sent by the authorities of Turkmenistan. The human rights activists are convinced that Turkmenistan was dissatisfied that the activist was active in opposition chat groups and video meetings broadcast by YouTube.

Ashgabat had previously used the Interpol channels to persecute some peaceful political activists, the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation reminds.

Orazmukhammedov’s relatives, residing in Turkmenistan, have been repeatedly threatened by special services officers, who urged them to convince Vepa to stop his activism.

On 18 March the activist was transferred from Konya to the deportation facility in Izmir.Pursuant to the court verdict, if the Turkish authorities had failed to find grounds for the deportation throughout 4 months and 20 days that he spent in custody, the original decision on the administrative oversight of the Migration Services Board must be revoked.
