On 28 June, 2020 Turkmen civilian activists residing in the US held an act of protest in front of Turkmenistan’s Embassy with requests for President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov’s resignation.
One of the demonstration organizers Nagima Muzapberova reported on her Facebook page that as soon as the activists gathered at Turkmenistan’s Embassy, diplomats immediately called the police claiming that the protest was being held without an official permit.
By the time the protest kicked off, the law enforcement officials were at the scene to ensure the safety of the protesters. The police entered the Embassy to present the permit, which had been issued in advance, to the diplomats.
Embassy staff watched the demonstration from the windows.
The demonstration participants then marched from the building of the Turkmen diplomatic mission towards the White House. They were escorted by local police who had temporarily cordoned off streets to ensure unhampered passage along the route for the protesters.

As Muzapberova previously said, the protest was deliberately timed to coincide with the birthday of President Berdymukhmamedov, who is turning 63 on 29 June, 2020.
