Conscripts in Lebap mobilized to grow silkworms

The season of growing silkworm cocoons has kicked off in Turkmenistan. In the villages of Lebap velayat, grains (silkworm eggs) were distributed to households of cotton growers.

Otherwise, their plots may be confiscated.

This year the use of child labour for cocoon production has been banned by the local authorities. However, instead of schoolchildren conscripts are being mobilized to grow silkworms, correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report.

This has previously been done unofficially. This year agricultural associations have been given permission to conclude agreements with commanding officers of military stations (if the latter give their consent) located on their territory or nearby.

A department of the armored infantry unit in the Gagarin residential area of Turkmenabat named, included in the agricultural association “Lebap” of Sayat etrap, have received 300 grams of grains and conscripts are currently engaged in cocoon production.

Pursuant to the agreement, three kilos of cocoons must be handed over from each gram of grains. There is currently a period between the third and the fourth silkworms’ sleep.

The sleep lasts 24 hours with insects continuously feeding on mulberry tree leaves for three to five consecutive days between the sleep periods. For this reason conscripts are searching for mulberry trees to feed silkworms.

This year cocoon producers will be paid 27 manats per kilo, compared to the last year’s price of 25 manats.

This year the target for silkworm cocoons in Turkmenistan has been increased from 2100 to 2300 tons.

Military personnel in Turkmenistan are officially engaged in the production of agricultural produce.

The President has repeatedly visited military bases where executives of the law enforcement agencies showed him meat, dairy products, fruit and vegetables produced in the farms owned by the law enforcement authorities. The post Conscripts in Lebap mobilized to grow silkworms first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
