Death toll from devastating earthquakes in Japan reaches 55

The death toll as a result of a series of powerful earthquakes in the Japanese Ishikawa Prefecture has reached 55 people, the Kyodo news agency reports. There are more than 100 victims.

The most destructive earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred on January 1 in the Noto Peninsula region. It has become the strongest in this area since 1885.

The largest number of victims was recorded in the cities of Wajima and Suzu - 24 and 20 deaths, respectively.

As a result of the tremors, buildings collapsed and train traffic stopped. 32 thousand houses were left without electricity. Water supply and communications have also been disrupted, and roads have been damaged.

Rescue work in the disaster area continues.
