Food grown in space could be hazardous to health

Research on the International Space Station (ISS) has shown that growing vegetables and fruits in zero gravity is possible. However, reports published in the journal Nature indicate a serious problem - space plants can be poisonous. Mail.ru reports this.

Scientists have found that plants on the ISS are more susceptible to infection by dangerous microorganisms such as Salmonella enterica. This is due to the fact that in conditions of weightlessness, the immune system of plants weakens.

Even thorough water treatment cannot guarantee the safety of contaminated greens. Therefore, scientists need to develop new methods for protecting plants in space flights.
