Groceries at state prices will no longer be sold in Ashgabat shops but will be delivered to homes

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that since 10 May a group of employees from the Association of Markets (Aşgabat şäher Bazarlar birleşigi) have been going door-to-door to inform residents that groceries at fixed prices will no longer be sold at state-run stores but will be delivered to homes.

They make an entry in their log book indicating passport details of one of the residents and how many people are registered in the apartment. Groceries will be delivered without charge.

When asked how often deliveries will be made and what the food ration is they do not provide an answer.

This is a decision made by the khyakimlik’s office. For the time being we are collecting data. Based on the results we will develop mechanisms to distribute and deliver groceries to Ashgabat residents, – one of the Association representatives said.

A resident of district Mir-3, who was visited by representatives of the Association, said that they were not interested in the income of family members.

It appears that this initiative is not about offering assistance to low-income households, – he suggested

The Ashgabat Association of Markets is made up of 13 main markets and three subsidiaries located in the capital. The Association’s address is 110, В Bitarap Türkmenistan avenue.

Despite the fact that officials report that the domestic market is fully provisioned with local produce , various measures are being introduced in Ashgabat state-run stores to eliminate queues: food rations are reduced; queues should not been visible from the streets; recently groceries in Ashgabat state-run stores are sold at market prices in the mornings.

In addition, state property is being privatized, including stores and warehouses. It is unlikely that subsidized groceries will be sold in privately-owned stores. The post Groceries at state prices will no longer be sold in Ashgabat shops but will be delivered to homes first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
