In Argentina, organs from one donor saved the lives of three patients at once

Argentine transplant surgeons performed a unique set of operations - they transplanted organs from one donor to three children at once, MIR 24 reported with reference to the RIA Novosti agency.

The head physician of the Garrahan hospital, Pablo Garcia Delucis, told reporters about the details of the operation. In total, more than one hundred specialists took part in the operations.

Two donor lungs were transplanted into a 13-year-old girl in a six-hour operation.A five-hour operation was performed to transplant a donor heart into a 4-year-old boy; in addition, a liver was transplanted into a one-year-old baby.

Thus, one donor saved the lives of three young patients at once. The Garrahan Hospital has been dealing with organ transplantation since 1992, during which time more than a thousand such operations have been performed there.

In Argentina, in relation to transplantation, there is a law of the so-called “presumption of consent”, according to which anyone who has not expressed a direct refusal to donate their organs for transplantation can become an organ donor by default.
