Discussions about introducing a new category began in 2012 after the release of the documentary “Casting”. The film highlighted the importance of the work of casting directors and invited the Academy to recognize their contributions to filmmaking.
Rules for admission and voting for the new award will be announced in April 2025.
The last time a new "Oscar" category was introduced was in 2001 "Best Animated Feature Film".
