The famous Arc de Triomphe in Palmyra will be restored by Russian scientists

Russian restorers will restore the destroyed Arc de Triomphe in Syrian Palmyra, reports the press service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

The project for the restoration of one of the unique monuments of antiquity was presented by the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In May of this year, it will be discussed in the Syrian capital Damascus at the international scientific council, and then at UNESCO.After the project is approved by UNESCO, restoration work is planned to begin in late summer - early autumn this year.

Russian scientists have been working on the restoration of the monument for several years. Excavations and analysis of the composition of historical stone were carried out, rubble was dismantled, and digital 3D models of the arch were also created.

The triumphal arch in Palmyra was built in the II-III centuries of our era, when the current Syria was part of the Roman Empire. Nowadays, the arch is one of the largest historical sights in Syria and is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
