The heirs will remember Magtymguly …

There is such an expression: “A man is alive as long as memory of him is alive.” For many years, among different generations of people, not only in Turkmenistan, but also abroad, a keen interest in the creative heritage of the great poet, founder of the Turkmen literary language Magtymguly Fraghi has not faded away.

The classic is popular today, not only schoolchildren, students, but also doctors of sciences, poets, masters of fine arts are interested in his philosophy and wise thoughts. He took a worthy place among his contemporaries and descendants.

The image of Magtymguly has been immortalized on paintings, famous Turkmen carpets, monuments and sculptures of the outstanding thinker have been installed in Iran, Turkey, Russia, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

One of the oldest monuments is located in Ashgabat, on the avenue bearing the name of the poet and, in the year of 300th anniversary of the lyric poet, the memorial also celebrates its “little” anniversary 50 years from the date of its construction. Made of concrete and natural stone, Magtymguly Fraghi remains among us.

The work of Magtymguly fully reflects his life path, through the poetry of the classic one can observe the history of the Turkmen people. The poet of the 18th century believed in high social ideals, was a great patriot of the Motherland, and carried his love for Mengli to the end of his days.

Mourning the separation from his beloved the girl was married off to another Magtymguly took the pseudonym Fraghi, which means “separated from happiness”.Here is an excerpt from the poem “Mengli’s Eyes”:

The living soul was destroyed By two executioners that are your eyes; Yet again they were unmerciful, Alike two whips were your eyes.

The biographical film “Fraghi Separated from happiness” (1984), directed by Hojakuli Nurliev, is based on the history of the young poet’s youth and his formation. The author of the feature film invited the young musician Annaseid Annamuradov to play the role of the classic of Turkmen literature.

As an unprofessional actor and a young man who had not yet learned the power of first love, he could not cope with one important episode that characterizes the personality of the young poet and the heartache that tormented Fraghi in relation to his beloved.

The scene of Magtymguly’s anger, who heard from a friend that the son of the clan khan Garly-Serdar was looking at Mengli, did not succeed. The memorized words of the actor did not contain the pain and passion that his hero experienced.

Neither long rehearsals nor the director’s instructions helped.Desperate, Annaseid asked to be left alone. For a long time he wandered among the weeping willows, rereading the poet’s poems, until he suddenly returned to the set with the firm intention of completing the failed scene.

To the director’s surprise, the episode was filmed in just one take. The delighted Hodjakuli Nurliev rushed to embrace the actor with joy and noticed that he was pulling his right hand aside.

Fresh burns gaped in the boy’s palm.It turned out that in order to fully feel the emotional pain and rage of the offended poet, unnoticed by those around him, Annaseid held a smoldering ember of saxaul in his hand, which he snatched from the fire present in the scene.

Having a warm heart and bitter sadness in it from unrequited love, Magrymguly set off on long wanderings across the countries of the East to return to his homeland as a mature and wise thinker, national poet and great son of his people.
