The Indian city of Mawsynram has been named the rainiest place on Earth

Every year, 10 000 tourists visit Mawsynram (India) to see its beauty and experience the heavy rains. For local residents, however, life in this “risky” place is marred by endless downpours.

Mawsynram has an annual rainfall of 11 873 mm, which is 18 times more than St Petersburg (662 mm). The rains here do not stop: intense downpours can last a week or even longer.

In June 2023, Mawsynram received 1 003 mm of rainfall in one day - more than the annual average for London.

Mawsynram residents stress that such heavy rainfall can be dangerous. During rainstorms, people do not leave their homes, children are prohibited from going to school due to the risk of landslides and floods. Electricity keeps cutting out, rainwater tanks overflow, and access to drinking water becomes limited.

Due to the incessant rain, locals even install soundproofing on the roofs of their houses, as the sound of rain, which usually calms people down, becomes a real irritant in Mawsynrama.

Such heavy rainfall in Mawsynram is explained by its location at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, as well as the influence of warm and humid air from the Bay of Bengal.

Tourists are attracted to Mawsynram for its exotic showers, picturesque landscapes and waterfalls, including the fourth highest in the world - Nohkalikai.

As a souvenir from Mawsynram, you can bring traditional Knups umbrellas, made from bamboo and banana leaves and shaped like a shell. This was reported by tochka.by with reference to Turprom.
