In Italy, a 68 years old man lost memory of a significant part of his life as a result of a car accident.According to the publication Il Messaggero, the victim, whose name is Luciano, was sure that after waking up in the hospital in 2019 that he was in 1980, and that he himself was 24 years old, writes TASS.
The consequences of the injury were astonishing: the man could not recognize his wife and adult 35 years old son.Moreover, seeing his own reflection in the mirror, Luciano experienced a severe shock.
His mind retained memories of the accident itself, but he was convinced that it happened four months before his upcoming wedding with his 19 years old bride.
The amnesia erased not only personal memories of family life and travels from the man's memory, but also knowledge of the most important events of recent decades. He did not remember the existence of mobile phones, GPS, significant historical events, including the September 11 attacks, or even his country's sporting achievements.
Despite intensive therapy, the patient's lost memories could not be restored. Psychologists focused on helping the patient accept his current age and new reality. Medical experts note that this case is exceptional, since traumatic amnesia usually affects only a short period of time before the incident and is often at least partially recoverable.
