The number of gulls and terns increased on Mikhailov Island in Turkmenistan

According to the results of a calculation made by scientists on Mikhailov Island in the Caspian Sea, an increase in the number of gulls and terns was found, informs the “MIR 24” TV channel.

Mikhailov Island is the second largest in the Turkmen part of the Caspian Sea. Geese, loons, gulls, waders, sea eagles, geese, swans and many others live here. During the period of migration or nesting, the number of birds can reach 600 thousand individuals.

As Meryem Soyunova, a senior researcher at the Hazar State Nature Reserve, noted, seagulls play an important role in the coastal environment, and their presence benefits both people and wildlife. They serve as indicators of the health of the marine environment, help control insect and rodent populations, promote nutrient cycling, and help disperse plant seeds.
