The world's most popular banana variety is at risk of extinction

Bananas of the most popular Cavendish variety may disappear due to a fungal disease, Argumenty i Fakty reports.

In the mid-20th century, another popular banana variety, Gros Michel, completely disappeared from the same disease. Cavendish is so popular due to its excellent taste and high yield; it can also withstand long-term transportation and storage. About half of the total banana turnover on the planet is the Cavendish variety.

Unfortunately, modern bananas practically no longer reproduce naturally, but are reproduced artificially through manual planting of root shoots. Thus, plants within a variety are actually clones of each other.
