Administrations of regions of Turkmenistan prepared a proposal to reduce the area currently alloted to cotton by 40,000 hectares in favor of growing potatoes and other vegetables, and gourds.
Deputy Chairman of the Government of Turkmenistan Esenmyrat Orazgeldiyev, overseeing the country’s agricultural complex, briefed on the proposal President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the online cabinet meeting on Friday.
Annually 620 thousand hectares are allotted for sowing cotton. In accordance with the proposal, it is envisaged to reduce this figure to 580 thousand hectares.
Currently, 55,550 hectares of land are allocated for the cultivation vegetables, gourds and other food crops.
The country is also expected to increase the production of cocoons from the current 2,100 tons to 2,300 tons by producing additional 145 tons in Ahal velayat, 25 tons in Balkan velayat and 30 tons in Mary velayat.
Following the report, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emohasized the importance of ensuring food abundance in the country, year-round supply of the population with local vegetables, gourds and other agricultural products.
