Turkmenistan Resumes Construction of Akina-Andkhoy Railroad Section in Afghanistan

Engineers and railway specialists from Turkmenistan on Monday arrived in the city of Akina in Afghanistan’s northern province of Balkh to resume the construction of the Akina-Andkhoy railroad section, the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan announced on Tuesday.

Turkmen specialists also brought with them all the necessary machinery and equipment for the railroad construction.

These works are carried out in accordance with the agreement signed earlier between the Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) Agency and the Afghan Railway Authority, according to the statement.

In Akina, railway workers from Turkmenistan were greeted by the heads of the Afghan Railway Authority and other officials of the Balkh province of Afghanistan.

The construction of Aqina-Andkhoy railroad section with a length of 30 km began on July 25, 2019. But for different reasons, including restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic, 29.2 kilometers of the railway were built, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said, adding that the remaining 800 meters of the railway are expected to be laid within one month.

The section is part of the Kerki-Imamnazar-Akina-Andkhoy railway which starts in Turkmenistan. The city of Akina borders Turkmenistan.
