Voters choose book cover design for the French publication of the novel “A stranger” by Atajan Tagan

The French Institute in Ashgabat organized an event in frames of the preparations for the publication of the historical novel “A stranger” in the French language.Famous writer, Honoured Worker of Arts of Turkmenistan Atajan Tagan attended the event as a guest of honour.

A contest for the best cover design for this book was announced among Turkmen artists last year. 14 works were submitted.All visitors to the cultural center can get acquainted with the works and choose the best one by voting.

The names of the authors are kept secret.The video clip of the famous play “We Will Meet Sure”, staged at the State Russian Drama Theater named after A.S.

Pushkin by Ashirmuhammet Rahmanov based on the play “Perengli” by Govshutgeldy Danatarov and Serdar Nepesov, as well as the exposition of stage costumes of the characters of this performance based on the novel “A stranger” underlined the historical and educational atmosphere of the evening.

The guests to the French Institute were once again imbued with the drama of an incredible story that occurred in the second half of the 19th century. ...An officer of the French army, artist and topographer, who participated in the military expedition of the Persians to the Murghab oasis, was captured in 1861 by the Teke soldiers.

Studying the language, customs, culture, values of the Turkmen people, the officer is imbued with sincere sympathy for the villagers and becomes their friend. “We will definitely meet!” - with these words they bid farewell him ...

Being among the Turkmen people, the French officer kept a diary.Returning home, he set forth his memories and impressions in a book published under the title “14-month captivity at the Turkmen people”.

Perhaps this historical fact would remain the property of a narrow circle of researchers.But famous writer, Honored Worker of Arts of Turkmenistan Atajan Tagan decided to present the story in a literary setting, and the French army officer, artist and topographer became the hero of the novel "A stranger".

Ashgabat schoolchildren studying French in this center staged several most striking fragments of the work.The voting results and the name of the winner of the creative contest will be announced in a week.
