A new airport is being built in Kerki

Today, a ground-based civil aviation infrastructure of Turkmenistan includes international airports in Ashgabat, Turkmenbashi, Turkmenabat and Mary, as well as airports in other towns. The Turkmen Airlines Fleet is equipped with the latest generation of airliners and helicopters from the world’s leading manufacturers. As for passenger vessels, this is, first of all, Boeing.

Along with this, a network of small airports is also being developed, covering small towns and developing industrial clusters, as well as promising localities concerning transport and logistics.

So, a new airport is being built in the city of Kerki on the western bank of the Amu Darya (Lebap region), designed to serve 100 passengers per hour. By order of the Agency Turkmen Airlines, the project is implemented by the Gundogdy private company.

Heavy concrete paving has already been completed on two flight strips with a length of 2,700 meters and a width of 45 meters, and specialized equipment is being installed, including signaling, ornithological, radio engineering and navigation one.

A 2,200-square-meter passenger terminal has been constructed. Now, internal finishing works are under way. The three-storied terminal building is 12 meters high. The flight control tower is located on the 3rd floor, its height is 31.7 meters.

The aircraft parking area is designed for two medium-sized or one large-sized vessel and 4 helicopters. The airport includes a Purpose-built Vehicle Service, a Fire and Emergency Rescue Service, as well as inspection and control points. Construction and installation works are currently in progress on these sites and other auxiliary technical facilities.

In general, the airport with an entire life support complex occupies an area of 210 hectares. At the same time, territory of 12,100 square meters around it is being landscaped.

The transport system of the country’s eastern region is actively developing, including its air sector. In particular, in the coming years, it is planned to build a new airport in the city of Garlyk, which will improve connectivity between growth points not only within Lebap, but also with other regions of the country.
