Construction and architecture of Turkmenistan: new development trends

The capital city development innovative concept, as well as comprehensive modernization activities ongoing in all regions of the country, is the realities which are in detail highlighted on the pages of the sectoral socio-political and scientific magazine “Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan”.

Its next issue opens with a publication about a new higher educational institution - the Institute of Public Utilities. The university campus was inaugurated on the Day of Knowledge and Students, and on September 1 it began to train professionals of a new formation, service specialists in the field of maintaining a huge and steadily growing utilities complex, carrying out human life-support activities in cities and villages.

The “Technosphere Safety” training program has been introduced for the first time in our country. This is the area of training specialists in the field of labor protection, ensuring industrial safety of technological and production processes, both under normal conditions and in emergency situations.

In addition to classrooms and technology labs, students at the university have been provided facilities for cultural and creative activities, music classes, and dances. There is a perfect sports complex, comfortable accommodation for students, young professionals and teachers.

A new step has been taken in the domestic urban development practice: in the conditions of a megalopolis, the educational and residential zones have been maximally approximated, which should have a most positive impact on the quality of education and, in general, on the quality of human life.

Along with the Institute of Public Utilities a new complex of buildings of the Chemistry Faculty of the Turkmen State University named after Mahtumkuli was commissioned, to which an article is also devoted in this issue of the magazine.

New buildings became part of the monumental architectural ensemble of the educational camp in the capital center, which, in addition to TSU buildings, also comprises the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the International University for the Humanities and Development.

Devoted to the world recognition of the high aseismic construction quality in our country is an article about the introduction of a control system in this area, and obtaining an international certificate in the field of appraisal of projects, buildings and structures, as well as laboratory examination and tests of building materials, which the Swiss Company SGS issued to the Research-and-Development Institute of Aseismic Construction of the Ministry of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan.

Other materials in this issue include an essay on the majestic white yurt “Nowruz ýaýlasynyň ak öýi” that has been built in Ak Bugday etrap of Akhal velayat. This socio-cultural-purpose facility is a large concert hall, an arena for holding mass celebrations and festive performances on the International Day of Novruz, celebrated on March 21.

“Of course, the yurt has not been used as a home for a long time already, but going far beyond this limit, it has become the embodiment of respect for traditions, family values, sanctity of the home, and unity”, the author writes.

The white yurt project itself has been initially based on a harmonious combination of the architectural design with the surrounding environment.Similar “Aköýi” buildings, like in Mary and Ashgabat suburb, are under construction in other velayats of the country.

Another two remarkable new building projects of this year are highlighted on the magazine’s pages. These are a complex consisting of the Rysgal Bank building, two shopping centers, an apartment house and a covered parking lot that has been built at the intersection of the capital’s Oghuz khan and Ankara Streets, as well as the “Gala” Cultural-Entertaining Center in Archabil etrap of Ashgabat city.

This building is located in a picturesque gorge, among the Kopetdag Mountain ranges.Having organically blended with the natural landscape, the “Gala” Center has replenished the modern infrastructure of hospitality being formed in Ashgabat and in the whole country.

Both original projects have been carried out by the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of the country.

All commissioned buildings of enterprises, social-purpose institutions, as well as roads, bridges and other facilities are product of the building sector. In addition to building new facilities, it provides the reconstruction of existing buildings.

The number of buildings in oil and gas, chemical, food and light industries is constantly growing. They are completed with advanced equipment and technologies that meet world standards.

All these facilities increase the potential of the national economy. Some of them are unique not only in the Central Asian region, but all over the world. This is described in the article “Construction Industry on the New Course of Development”.

The section “Experience” contains materials on the new era in the Turkmen bridge engineering.Only in 2016 a great deal of work was carried out the country in this area, which continues today.

New modern bridges have been built along the roads as part of reconstruction of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat, Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi and Ashgabat-Dashoguz motorways. The construction of bridges along these highways was carried out for several years.

Hundreds of large and small reinforced concrete, metal and pendant bridges were built.

Under the heading “Science” specialists will find articles about the history of building materials and their scientific study, the application of the non-autoclaved aerated concrete method in rural construction, as well as on effectiveness of the post-industrial economy.

The attention of a broader reading audience will be attracted by an overview of historical terms in the architecture of the Turkmen people. It is about making an architectural and construction terminology vocabulary of old words, which is needed by every architect or architectural historian in their daily practice in studying or restoring built heritage.

The article is concluded with the material about the victories of members of the sports club at the Ministry of Construction and Architecture of Turkmenistan, who took an active part in the Ashgabat Asian Games and won medals in various sports.
