Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital after assassination attempt

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died of wounds following an assassination attempt on him, reports Interfax with reference to Kyodo.

It is noted that the politician spoke at a campaign event in support of the Liberal Democratic Party in the city of Nara.

The former head of the Japanese government was shot twice, after which he fell and lost consciousness.

It is noted that Abe was admitted to a local hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and, despite all the efforts of doctors, it was not possible to save his life.

The suspect in the attempt was detained on the spot - this is 41 years old Tetsuya Yamagami, a resident of Nara, who served in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years in the mid-2000s.

Shinzo Abe announced his intention to retire due to health issues in August 2020. He served as prime minister for about eight years.
