Hawaii could take up to 5,5 billion dollars to rebuild after wildfires

The authorities of Hawaii have calculated how much it will cost to restore the islands affected by unprecedented forest fires, reports RIA Novosti with reference to the Maui County authorities.

The amount that the US government may have to spend on disaster relief is estimated at 5,5 billion USD. In Hawaii, several cities were destroyed due to forest fires, 2170 buildings burned down - mostly residential buildings. The latest death toll has risen to 89.

The fires in Hawaii began on August 8. They were caused by heat, drought and strong winds brought by Hurricane “Dora”. The fire area is estimated at more than 800 hectares. The authorities managed to evacuate more than 11 thousand people - local residents and tourists.
