House demolition campaign in Ashgabat results in an increasing number of stray animals

Residential houses continue to be knocked down in Ashgabat. As residents get new accommodation of smaller sizes in high-rise apartment buildings, they are forced to get rid of cats and dogs due to a shortage of living space.

This has led to an increase in the number of stray animals.

In search of food the animals dig in garbage bins. Some inhabitants organize places where neighbours can bring food leftovers for stray cats and dogs.

However, the municipal authorities instruct the public utilities officials to exterminate stray animals.

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” reported a week ago that a new campaign to demolish residential house is still underway in Ashgabat.

Two-storey apartment blocks are being pulled down between Turkmenbashi avenue and Andalib streets, not far from Nogin street.Five buildings have already been demolished and ten more are expected to be knocked down.
