Construction works to build the Department of Olympic Sports, which will become part of Turkmenistan’s National Institute of Sport and Tourism, were launched at the venue of the former Turkish shopping centre “Yimpas”.
The project, which is scheduled to be implemented by the privately-owned Turkish construction company Ajaýyp Gurluşyk, envisages the remodeling of an eight-storey office building “Yimpas” which will accommodate the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, and the buildings of the former same-name supermarket will be home to the Department of Olympic Sports.
The sports complex, a five-storey dormitory, a recreation area, a car park, bicycle lanes and race tracks will be built on the adjacent territory. “Turkmenistan: golden age” reports that apart from the business zone, a conference room, a museum and a gym are scheduled to be incorporated in the ministry’s building.
The shopping centre was closed in December 2016.
Since then the Turkmen and Turkish sides have failed to reach agreement on the future fate of the building which earlier had been planned to be demolished.
“Chronicles of Turkmenistan” reported that in April 2018 the shopping centre was handed over to the Institute of PE and Sports.
