10 June is Portugal Day or Camões Day, Portugal and the Portuguese Communities. The national holiday commemorates the death of the Portuguese poet Luis Camões, who is revered by the Portuguese as the author of the Lusiads, an epic chronicling the history of Portugal and reminiscent of the heyday of the Portuguese Empire.
