Turkmen Foreign Minister, UN Secretary-General Discuss Key Areas of Cooperation

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov on Tuesday met in New York with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The two sides discussed the main directions of strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, as well as issues on the international agenda.

Meredov conveyed greetings to Guterres from President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Special attention was given to the resolution “The Role and Importance of the Policy of Neutrality in Maintaining and Strengthening International Peace, Security and Sustainable Development,” adopted on May 20.

The Turkmen side said the resolution reaffirms the importance of neutrality in conflict prevention. Guterres, in turn, noted the timeliness of the document and expressed appreciation to Turkmenistan.

The discussions also covered the initiative to establish the University of Peace and Neutrality of Turkmenistan.

The sides reviewed proposals related to the development of a Global Security Strategy, the creation of a Mediation Chamber for Peace, and the advancement of preventive diplomacy.

Meredov and Guterres highly valued the work of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation on sustainable development goals.
