Turkmenistan’s authorities claim that Ashgabat’s population reaches 1 million

At the video conference held on 6 August the khyakim of Ashgabat Shamukhammet Durdylyev briefed President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov that the population of the capital exceeded 1 million.

The mayor also put forward a proposal on expanding the territorial borders of Ashgabat to be reviewed by the President, which was subsequently supported by Berdymukhammedov.

The state information agency TDH reports that the proposal to expand the administrative and territorial borders of the capital was handed over to the Mejlis for further consideration.

Durdylyev was charged with the task of setting up a new Ashgabat etrap (district).

It should be emphasized that the results of the Census which was held in Turkmenistan in 2012 have not been disclosed so far.According to sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”, some 4 751 120 people reside in the country.
