Anti-corruption agency to be set up in Turkmenistan

On May 26 a regular government session was held, where the Mejlis Chairperson Akdja Nurberdyeva briefed on drafting a set of bills within the framework of fight against corruption, which will be submitted to be considered at another Parliament session.

The announcement was made on launching the state program committed to combatting corruption and bribery, which was ordered by President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov on May 15.

“Turkmenistan: Golden Age” reports that currently the laws pertaining to fight against corruption are being reviewed.

Speaking about the significance of the anti-corruption campaign, the President stressed the role of the Parliament as a coordinating body.

Radio “Azatlyk” reported that s special anti-corruption committee, independent from military and law-enforcement agencies, is scheduled to be established in Turkmenistan.

The new agency is expected to be granted a broad scope of authority which might result in an increased number of bribery-related arrests.

Let us recall that following a large-scale cleansing in the government on 12 May, Turkmenistan is set to crack down on corruption on all levels.
