Some details pertaining to the fate of the Chairperson of Turkmenistan’s Parliament

In March 2018 Chairperson of Turkmenistan’s Mejlis (Parliament) Akdja Nurberdyeva unexpectedly left her office, which she had occupied for 11 years, from February 2007.

Since that time Nurberdyeva has disappeared from the media space.Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”, former Chairperson of the Parliament resides in Ashgabat.She is barred from leaving the country but is not subjected to persecution.

Moreover, Nurberdyeva was offered a job in the Ministry of Justice, but she turned down the proposal referring to her medical condition.In October she underwent a course of treatment in the resort of Archman.

Let us recall that before leaving her post, Nurberdyeva had been nominated as a parliamentary candidate for the Mejlis of the VI convocation from Turkmenistan’s Democratic Party.

However, a few days before the voting her name was excluded from the list of registered candidates.

The media outlet “Gundogar” highlighted that at that time there were two candidates in the election district №15 “Bezmeнin” running for members of Turkmenistan’s Mejlis: Nurberdyeva and head of the urban planning and beautification control department of the khyakimlik’s office Mukhammednazar Kurbanberdyev. 4 days later bios and photos of the candidates running for the Parliamentary seats were published in the newspaper “Neitralny Turkmenistan”, but Kurbanbderdyev was the only candidate from the electoral district №15 “Bezmeyin”.

Gulshat Mammedova, who had previously held the position of the Deputy Prime Minister overseeing culture and mass media, was unanimously elected Chairperson of the Mejlis.
