Russia’s Lakhta Center Named Skyscraper of the Year’

The Lakhta Center erected in Russia’s St. Petersburg by major Turkish contractor Rönesans Construction won the prestigious Emporis Skyscraper Award, Anadolu news agency reported last Friday.

The Emporis Skyscraper Award recognizes the world's tallest structures as well as impressive architectural projects. This marks the first time that the prestigious award has gone to a project in Russia in the 20-year-long history of the award.

According to the report, the 462-meter Lakhta Center is considered the tallest building not only in Russia, but also in Europe and ranks 14th worldwide.

The jury noted that the use of environmentally friendly and energy-saving technologies in the building was also assessed in the selection of Lakhta Center as a prize-winner.

In addition, Lakhta Center entered the Guinness Book of Records for continuous pouring of concrete, where 19,624 cubic meters of concrete were used. In the construction of a skyscraper weighing 670 thousand tons, a box-shaped foundation was laid on piles with a diameter of 2 meters each.

Lakhta Center is one of the few high-tech architectural projects in the world. The skyscraper has 34 high-speed elevators operating at speeds up to 8 m/s.
