Turkmenistan creating buffer forest zone near Aral Sea

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Nov. 13

By Huseyn Hasanov Trend:

Work is underway to create a buffer forest zone on the eastern shore of the Sarygamysh Lake in the Dashoguz province of Turkmenistan in order to prevent the flow of dust and salt from the Aral zone to the territory of the country, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.

An area of 20,000 hectares is allocated for the forest zone.

Nine kilometers of power transmission lines, more than 38 kilometers of irrigation networks were laid on the Botendag upland, a new powerful transformer was installed, and a temporary pumping station was built for the successful implementation of a large-scale ecological project.

It should be reminded that in 2017, Turkmenistan chairs the International Fund for saving the Aral Sea (IFAS).

The IFAS, established in 1990s in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, aims at financing joint projects and programs to save the Aral Sea and improve the ecological situation there.

The Aral problem has affected the north of Turkmenistan, in particular, Dashoguz region, where serious problems occurred associated with providing the population with clean drinking water and controlling salinization of tillable lands.

The IFAS was granted observer status at the UN General Assembly on Dec. 11, 2008.
