Sugar in Turkmenistan is sold against signed register

Turkmenistan is again experiencing a shortage of sugar.

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that the price for sugar in Dashoguz markets has soared to 10-11 manats per kilo.

Privately-owned stores sell sugar at 7 manats but it is not always available. If sugar is available, a maximum of 1 kilo per household is allowed.

“If you go to a store in your neigbourhood where shop assistants personally know their customers, you give your name and address and sign in the log book after which a kilo of sugar per family is sold in your name”, — a correspondent says.

Let us recall that restrictions on the sale of sugar were imposed in Turkmenistan in the summer of 2016 when a maximum 3 kilos per person applied.

The state-run stores sold a 3 kilo pack of sugar at 9 manats whereas privately-owned stores offered sugar at 5 manats per kilo.

In 2017 the price for sugar did not exceed 5 manats per kilo.
