Turkmen electricity export growth hits record high

In January-September, Turkmenistan increased the value of electricity exports by 2.4 times compared to 9 months of 2019. The physical volume of deliveries, according to the State Statistics Committee of the country, increased by 2.1 times.

The key buyers of Turkmen electricity are currently Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan. In the near future, it is planned to increase its supplies to neighboring Afghanistan.

In January-October, enterprises subordinate to the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan increased electricity production by 40.3% compared to the same period last year. For ten months of 2020, they fulfilled the production plan by 122.9%.

At the beginning of this year, Charymyrat Purchekov, who previously held position of Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, was appointed as Minister of Energy of Turkmenistan. Appointing him to the post of Minister, President Berdimuhamedov emphasized the necessity to increase the production and export of electricity, the construction of power lines Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan.

According to the industry development plan, by 2024 electricity production in Turkmenistan should reach 33 billion kilowatt-hours per year. To achieve this goal, the existing production facilities are being modernized. In 2018, it was opened the country’s first combined-cycle power plant.
